Falkirk & Linlithgow Ladies Circles join together for Friends of Chernobyl Children
This summer Falkirk & Linlithgow Ladies Circles joined forces to host a party for 21 Belarusian children staying with host families in the Forth Valley area through the charity 'Friends of Chernobyl Children' (FOCC).
On 26 April 1986, reactor no 4 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Plant overheated and exploded sending a plume of highly radioactive fallout into the atmosphere. 60 - 70% of the fallout settled on the agricultural lands of Belarus to the north. The effects of the radiation spread across the landscape and remain devastating to this day. The FOCC charity bring groups of children, aged from 7, to Scotland for a 'month of love and care'. This is done through host families who look after a Belarusian child as if it were there own. They have clean, healthy, uncontaminated air and surroundings, lots of healthy food and access to dental and medical treatment. They enjoy a packed programmed of activities Monday-Friday organised by the charity and other local volunteers such as Ladies Circle. The children return home at the end of their stay with suitcases full of vitamins, warm clothes and other essential supplies.
This year Falkirk and Linlithgow Ladies Circle organised a party for the children's last day of their stay. With the help of the children's translators, Circlers kicked off the proceedings in the garden of Longcroft Halls in Linlithgow on a lovely sunny morning with a few fun parachute and ball games. This was followed by lots of action packed games organised by a local branch of Enjoy-a-ball. It was lovely to see the children enjoying themselves. We then provided the children with a snack lunch and they left with goody bags full of snacks to take with them on their long journey home the following day.
Much fun and laughter was had by all ... children and Circlers alike!
Thanks also go to Falkirk Round Table who made a financial contribution towards the party and also Larbert Round Table who donated directly to the charity to pay for a special day out for the children.
