Shoebox Campaign Success for the Girls in Area 3Sunday, 8 January 2012
As Area Chairman this year, I decided that I wanted to raise money for the Help For Heroes Charity, a very worthy cause and one which many Circlers and friends have connections with. Helen Kitson, Team Tinker's CSLO introduced us to the 'Shoeboxes for Soldiers ' Campaign. This was something few people, including myself, had heard of even though we had all taken part in Operation Christmas Child.
Everyone on Team Tinker thought it was a brilliant idea so we set to work asking the girls of Area 3 to collect and fill shoeboxes for male and female soldiers which would then be sent to troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Circlers and their families began to collect! I 'collected' the toiletries, coffee, tea, hot chocolate and biscuits from every hotel I stayed in, including LCI Hamburg hotel and then bought things like flip flops, beanie hats, razors, noodles, ravioli, puzzle books, travel board games and playing cards and much, much more. In fact it was amazing just how much you could fit into a shoebox! Family and friends donated more and more items and in the end Rothwell, my own Circle, had 10 shoeboxes filled to the brim.
A couple of weeks later, Area 3 had their October meeting. We had decided it would be a 'Hero' night and so Circlers came dressed in theme...I was Guy Fawkes, one of my heroes! After the business side of the meeting we awarded Heroes chocolates to Elvis Presley for being the best dressed, ate more Heroes chocolate and took part in a quiz about famous female heroes.
The enormous pile of shoeboxes was sent out to the van and I am pleased to say that Area 3 were great. That night we sent a fantastic 68 shoeboxes with treats in for our soldiers. Well done to Helen for inspiring us with her idea and a massive thank you to the girls in Area 3 for their support.
